At a glance
| Platform | How many | What they do |
|---|---|---|
| X | 0–2 | Join an event or a known community |
| Bluesky | 1–2 | Get picked up by custom feeds and tag search |
| Mastodon | 2–5 | The main way strangers find you; people follow them |
| 0–3 | Light topic signal |
X (Twitter)
X ranks posts by what they say, not by their tags, so hashtags matter less than they did.
- Use them for events, chats and communities that already use a tag:
#WWDC,#BuildInPublic. - One or two, at the end. More reads as spam and can cut reach.
- Skip made-up tags nobody searches.
Bluesky
Hashtags are clickable and searchable, and many custom feeds are built on them.
- Use the tag a feed or community already follows:
#ArtistsOnBluesky,#BookSky. - One or two is normal. Tags count toward the 300 characters.
- Write naturally first; the feed brings readers who care.
Mastodon
No algorithm and limited search, so hashtags carry discovery.
- People follow hashtags, so a tag puts you in their home timeline.
- Two to five specific tags:
#Photography #FilmPhotography, not#Photo. - Write them in CamelCase (
#OpenSource). Screen readers read the words. - Tags work across servers; check what people on yours use.
Hashtags are clickable but carry little weight.
- Up to three, specific to your field.
- At the end of the post, not in the middle of sentences.
Find the right tags
- Search the tag on each platform and read recent posts. Active and on topic? Use it.
- Note the tags people you follow use.
- Look at what feeds (Bluesky) and servers (Mastodon) exist for your topic.
- AI assistants are good at suggesting candidates. Check each one by hand before using it.
